TIMOTHY AKIMANZI
Mixed Media Artist | Kigali · Berlin

Born in 1994 in Namutamba, Uganda, Timothy Akimanzi relocated to Kigali, Rwanda in 1998 — the city that would shape both the man and the artist. The fifth-born in a family of six siblings, all drawn to the arts, Timothy began his creative journey working at Inema Arts Center and Choose Kigali Gallery, two of Kigali’s most respected creative institutions. He currently exhibits his work at Mads Kigali, where his distinctive voice continues to captivate collectors and
audiences alike. Deeply drawn to the dramatic landscapes of the Land of a Thousand Hills, Timothy’s mixed media work — built on acrylic and metallic paints, complex layering, and bold experimentation with texture and colour — moves fluidly between the tropical beauty of Rwanda and the stark
grandeur of the wider world. In 2016–2018, he was invited by the Swedish government to exhibit in Arvidsjaur, Luleå, and Skellefteå, exploring art’s therapeutic power for refugee communities, before representing
Rwanda again through the Swedish Institute’s creative exchange programme. From 2019–2021, he exhibited in Yokohama and Hakone, Japan, and in 2019 represented Rwanda at the Africa Contemporary Art Association Conference in the United States, uniting art, global health technology, and philanthropic innovation. Now based in Berlin, Germany, Timothy Akimanzi is a compelling voice in contemporary African art — rooted in Rwanda, recognised internationally, and always expanding horizons.
